Coastal Observing Systems: Present Status and Future Directions

The current and planned implementation of both research and operational coastal observing systems will greatly improve our ability to learn more about air-sea-land interactions in the coastal zone, to make predictions and to mitigate hazards. This session, bringing together developers of coastal ocean observatories with expertise from the coastal modules of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and Global Terrestrial Observing System (GTOS), will provide a forum for the scientists and managers developing these systems to provide updates on their status, exchange experiences, and show the results that are coming from these systems. Since many of the systems are quite new this session may provide the first time that groups around the world can share their experiences in a common forum.  Papers are encouraged on the overall observing system design, products derived from the systems, data management and socio-economic issues, and finally accompanying development of new technologies and capabilities (data assimilative modeling; in situ and remote platforms and sensors).
